Pule Mabote (22) was sentenced to life in jail on Monday, 16 August by Bloemfontein High Court for raping a 65-year-old gogo.
Colonel Thandi Mbambo said the sentence followed an incident on the night of Sunday, 29 November last year when the victim was woken by a knock at her home and went to open, thinking it was her grandson.
She opened the door and was hit with a beer bottle on the forehead by the accused and sustained a wound. The accused then raped her and left the house. The victim managed to scream and alerted the neighbours, who caught the accused.
Mbambo said a case of rape was registered at Brandfort Police Station.
Sergeant Lebogang Dikgacoi of the Bultfontein family violence, child protection and s.e.xual offences unit was assigned to the case.
Mbambo said Free State commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane appreciated the assistance of Brandfort residents in capturing the rapist and handing him over.
“The investigator was also praised for his diligence in securing a heavy sentence for the accused, which will send a strong message that gender-based violence will not be tolerated,” Mbambo said.
