Severe thunderstorm causes havoc in Pietermaritzburg

A severe thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy rains and hail, have caused localised flooding and damage in Pietermaritzburg. The heavy hail during the thunderstorm that lasted for about half an hour, damaged vehicles which were on the road.

KwaZulu-Natal Cooperate Governance spokesperson, Senzo Mzila says they have activated disaster management teams: “Disaster Management teams in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality are responding to a number of incidents that have occurred as a result of heavy rains and hail that took place in Pietermaritzburg. According to the report received by the department severe rains affected part of Pietermaritzburg CBD which led to localised flooding there is also incidents of uprooting of trees and there was a hail storm in the area.”
