Five people have lost their lives in two separate crashes on Christmas Day in the Eastern Cape. Provincial Transport Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says four of them were killed in a head-on collision on the R61 road near Cofimvaba.

Earlier, a man believed to be a civil servant died when a state vehicle he was driving collided with an SUV on the N2 towards Qunu. The two occupants of the SUV were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Binqose says police are investigating cases of culpable homicide.

He says, “Sadly it’s five people who have lost their lives on our roads on Christmas Day, turning what was supposed to be a Merry Christmas into a gory one for their families and their loved ones.

“The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe has extended her sincere word of condolences to those families that have lost their loved ones and is pleading with motorists to ensure that no accident is going to happen on their name. Not today, not tomorrow, not on any other day.”

On Friday, five people died in a multiple car crash on the N1 road near Modimolle in Limpopo. Traffic authorities say two other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The crash occurred due to a tyre burst from one of the vehicles that was travelling south.
