Hundreds of members of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal have marched in Howick against alleged nepotism and corruption by uMngeni mayor, Chris Pappas. The protestors handed over their memorandum at the uMngeni municipal offices. The allegations include preferential treatment of uMngeni Tourism where Pappas’ partner JP Prinsloo is involved.

The Youth League braved the scorching sun and marched through the small town of Howick. The march proceeded amid a heavy police and security presence.

Youth League’s Provincial Task Team Coordinator Zamanguni Zondi says they are not just calling for Pappas’ resignation, but they want all tenders awarded during his tenure to be investigated.

“It is the one of the NPO receiving amounts which is said to be the fiancé to the director of that NPO. That is the main one that we are saying needs to be investigated. The municipality has procurement processes that need to be followed in order for someone to be given money. Therefore we are saying we want to know and see all the papers that led to this NPO receiving the money,” says Zondi.

The allegations of nepotism and corruption surfaced within days after the Democratic Alliance (DA) announced that mayor Chris Pappas is their candidate for KwaZulu-Natal premier in next year’s elections.

The Youth League’s deputy president Phumzile Mgcina has denied that they targeted the DA-led municipality.

“We are here as the ANCYL to submit the memorandum regarding the allegation that we had with the Mayor, with Pappas that has to do with corruption and the NPO that has been fitting as the municipality. So we are here as the ANCYL to submit the memorandum. We want answers. We want him to account. We want to assist the young people of uMngeni to access job opportunities in that municipality. We believe that this municipality is hindering young people from getting jobs to work there,” explains Mgcina.

The Speaker of the uMngeni municipality Janis Holmes says Mayor Pappas did a declaration of interest. Speaking after accepting the protestors’ memorandum, Holmes said she will submit Pappas’s declaration of interest again to the Department of Cooperative Governance in the province. Holmes says the march affected activities in the town.

“It is founded on fake news. It is disappointing that this went ahead on a day when Howick is very busy, we have pension payouts today, and it has also affected businesses. I have already done an investigation that counsellor Pappas did not declare his interests, which he actually did do. I have put that in writing to the previous MEC of COGTA. But I will do so again and I will respond to any other organization with regards to these so-called claims against Mayor Pappas,” says Holmes. The ANC Youth League has given the municipality seven days to respond to their demands.
