Eastern Cape-born singer Zahara does not want to be boxed, as she is now dabbling in the internationally acclaimed music genre, amapiano. This comes after the musician released her new yanos song on Friday, 3 November, titled Guqa Ngedolo. Speaking to SowetanLIVE, Zahara admitted that she was sceptical about the idea at first but after hearing what her voice sounded like on her new song, she was sold. Her new song was produced by the legendary Mojalefa Thebe, popularly known as Mjakes
“This was all Bhut’Mjakes’ idea. He’s the one who came to me and requested I try amapiano, and because I’ve known him for so long, most of my career really, I thought to myself: ‘why not?’
“Seeing that I write songs about my life, my experiences, how I’m feeling about everything that happens around me, it doesn’t really matter which beat or genre my lyrics or vocals are on. My whole being is to inspire people through my music and the genre doesn’t really need to factor,” the award-winning musician said.
“When you’re a musician, you’ll forever be boxed in a category or offering. But what people don’t realise is that as musicians, we need to be innovative, to elevate ourselves and evolve with the times and that’s what I’m doing.
“I want to become a better musician hence I’m dipping my toes in something new.”Earlier this year, Zahara also let her fans into her personal space with her reality TV show titled Zahara: As I Rise on SABC 1.
The songtress said at the time that the aim was to control the narrative and give a glimpse into her love life. People think they know me, but they don’t really know me. I want to show people my spiritual side, my family, my close friend, and who I am dating.
“I know people love Zahara and I want even the mama in the village who I have healed through my music to see how I live and how I think. It will be unscripted and show who I truly am. I am all about inspiring people and healing.
