The African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa says after 30 years of democracy, the governing party still remains a party of choice. Ramaphosa delivered his January 8 Statement in a full-packed Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday.
Dignitaries in attendance include former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, alliance partners, and representatives from fraternal parties such as Mozambique’s Frelimo party, Zimbabwe’s Zanu-PF and MPLA of Angola. President Cyril Ramaphosa used his 2024 ANC January 8 Statement to highlight the ruling party’s achievements in its last 30 years of governance.
Ramaphosa says, “In 1999 only 2.5 million people had access to social relief. Today, more than 18 million people in our country receive grants. The Social Relief of Distress Grant, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide relief to unemployed people, lays the basis for a future Basic Income Grant. Nearly every young person aged 15-24 years is literate, and adult literacy now stands at 85%, up from only 64% in 1996. Despite persistent challenges, the South African economy has expanded over the past 30 years. The number of South Africans in employment increased from 8 million in 1994 to 16.7 million now.”
The annual statement event comes amidst the ANC preparing for what some predict is their biggest test since 1994. The ruling ANC will launch its election manifesto in February.Ramaphosa says they are working towards a decisive victory. “The ANC is ready to launch a formidable campaign that will engage with citizens and every sector of society to seek a decisive mandate from the people to continue advancing the transformation project.”
He says despite all its challenges, the ANC still remains the people’s choice in South Africa. “The ANC’s role in working with the people to liberate South Africa from the yoke of apartheid and to vastly improve the lives of millions over the last 30 years cannot be matched by any other party. No other party has both a clear vision for a better more equal society and the capability to achieve it. The ANC remains the party of choice for all who seek to build a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa.”
As the party gears up for elections, the ANC President has a strategy to help the millions of unemployed youth.
“When young people seek jobs the issue of experience should not be a barrier. We should employ young people to give them the experience and not ask for experience before we employ them. The issue of experience must fall away they too must never feel neglected and they too must get jobs,” further explains the AN president.
Ramaphosa also boasts the ANC’s commitment to women’s empowerment, saying women within the administration are not treated as second-class citizens. He is adamant that the ANC is the only party with a 50/50 women representation policy in its ranks and where it governs.
