City Power is urging residents of Joburg’s inner city to use electricity sparingly as work to restore power to full capacity continues.

Thursday’s fire in an underground tunnel near the M1 double-decker caused a major blackout.

City Power’s investigations determined that cable theft was the cause of the blaze.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the utility had managed to restore power to most affected areas.

“We urge all our customers to exercise extreme caution, especially when they are using electricity to avoid overloading the network because what we have restored is really the work of the backfeeding that we have managed to put in place around some of the substations, especially Ford substation and also Bramfontein substation, where we managed to swing the load.”

Mangena said the demand is expected to spike following the long weekend.

“We wish to remind customers that the network remains under severe pressure, and any increase in consumption could lead to overloading, and subsequently, further outages.”
