The City of Johannesburg’s public safety committee has categorised the killing of a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer as an attack on the safety of the city.

This follows the shooting of officer Matome Mokoena.

He was shot while on duty by suspected robbers in Vlakfontein in the south of Johannesburg.

Mokoena and his colleague were responding to a call of a robbery when the suspects opened fire when the officers approached the vehicle the criminals were travelling in.

When the officers took cover at a house nearby, the suspects followed Mokoena and shot and killed him.

The police are investigating a case of robbery and murder, and no arrests have been made.

The chairperson of the public safety committee, Sarah Wissler, has condemned the incident.

We cannot stand or allow violent criminals to distabilise our communities and undermine our justice system, I stand fully behind our JMPD officers.”
