The family of late African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Gertrude Shope has remembered her as a humble yet firm matriarch.
The former ANC Women’s League president was laid to rest at the West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Shope, fondly known as MaShope, died last week at the age of 99.

She’s been remembered as a struggle icon, honoured alongside women like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, for her role in the fight for a democratic South Africa.
Her granddaughter, Gomolemo Mafole, says Shope’s unwavering love for the ANC, uMkhonto weSizwe, her country, and her family will never be forgotten.
“Rest in peace and power. I would like to add, the last time I was on this stage, I was receiving my master’s, it was my master’s graduation, and my grandmother had come to support me. She was so proud of me that day. And so as I stand on this stage again, I vow that I will continue to make her proud.”
