The City of Cape Town admits that structural fires and car accidents are two of the biggest challenges firefighters face during the winter season.
Its latest figures show a decline of 381 structural fires in the metro over the last two years.
But there’s been an increase of 264 emergency responses for motor vehicle accidents.

MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith said that when it came to fires, prevention begins at home.
“The statistics also show that July tends to have the highest number of structural fires. That’s when temperatures plummet and the use of heaters and other appliances increase, so this is a critical reminder to us all about fire risks and the need for vigilance.”
Smith said that while they continued to invest in fire and rescue services, everyone should take precautions.
“My appeal this winter is to hash out a family emergency plan, be alert to the dangers of various heating and cooking appliances, remember to save our emergency number – 021 480 7700.”
The City of Cape Town’s emergency number is 021 480 7700.
