A faction of the AmaZulu royal family backing Prince Simakade is optimistic that the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) will uphold a ruling that could pave the way for the dethroning of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.
Tensions have run high within the royal house since King Misuzulu was crowned as monarch following the 2021 deaths of King Zwelithini and Queen Regent Mantfombi.

Challenge to the Throne
Prince Simakade, the king’s half-brother, argues that customary protocols were ignored during the selection of Misuzulu, and that he is the rightful heir.
In December 2023, the High Court in Pretoria ruled to set aside President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recognition of King Misuzulu as monarch.
Just two weeks ago, the SCA reserved judgment in an appeal challenging the king’s legitimacy.
Next Steps in the Dispute
Speaking on 702’s Nguni programme, Siyaxoxa ku-702, Prince Thokozani Zulu commented on the path forward.
“We cannot take this matter back to the family for resolution,” he said. “There is a court ruling that the royal family alone cannot mediate this without intervention.”
Prince Thokozani added that the President must appoint a committee to investigate whether Misuzulu’s identification process adhered to customary laws and traditions.
The royal family and the broader Zulu nation now await the SCA’s judgment, which could reshape the future of the Zulu monarchy.
