Missing Pyper Cherokee aircraft found, all 3 passengers confirmed dead

The Pyper Cherokee aircraft, which went missing on Sunday, has been located. Tragically, the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) confirmed that all three passengers on board were found deceased.

Flight Details and Pilot Involved

The aircraft, operated by a student pilot, departed Virginia Airport around 3pm. It failed to reach its intended destination and was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south toward Pietermaritzburg or Greytown.

Investigation Underway

The ARCC has stated that the investigation will now be handled by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed condolences:
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased passengers.”

Duma highlighted the loss of the student pilot as a blow to the industry:

“Losing such a young leader with a promising career in aviation is tragic and devastating.”

Although the investigation continues, Duma noted that severe weather patterns in the province may have contributed to the fatal incident.
