Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says he will approach Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to give more power to the city’s municipal police.
This week, Mchunu published new draft regulations to expand municipal policing powers.

Hill-Lewis welcomed the move, but says the draft regulations are far too limited.
“They expand metro police powers in two respects, but they critically exclude the one core thing that we have been asking for, which is that our officers should have criminal investigative powers.”
The mayor says the city will use the 60-day public comment period from 10 June 2025 to approach Mchunu.
