Lasizwe goes international with ‘Awkward Dates’! YouTube star Lasizwe Dambuza has taken a major step in his content creation journey by welcoming his first international guest on his hit show, Awkward Dates. The 26-year-old sat down with Ugandan journalist Simon Kaggwa Njala, famously known for the viral interview moment, “Why are you gay?”

A Bold Move for Representation and Dialogue

Lasizwe told Daily Sun that the episode marks a huge milestone.
“I’m excited that it’s our first Awkward Dates that’s international. This is our first time tapping into regions we haven’t touched before,” he said.

With the episode airing during Pride Month, Lasizwe emphasized the importance of activism and representation, particularly in Africa.

“It’s important to hold a mirror to society. People like Simon live among us—he’s our uncle, our brother. These conversations need to happen,” he said.

Unscripted, Unexpected Growth

Lasizwe revealed that nothing on the show is scripted — even the moment when Simon asked him the infamous question: “Why are you gay?”

Awkward Dates is very authentic. I go in with an open heart. I actually expected Simon to be stiff and possibly homophobic. But what I found was a man willing to learn,” Lasizwe explained.

A Personal Reflection

The interaction reminded Lasizwe of his own brother, Lungile Mchunu, who he described as having once been “extremely homophobic.”

“Sitting across from Simon felt like sitting across from my brother. I hope that episode sparks something in people. If someone like Simon can learn and grow, then others can too.”

A Global Vision for the Show

Lasizwe shared that this episode is only the beginning of an international expansion for the show.

We’re going in that direction. We want to tap into different voices, cultures, and truths. But most importantly, we want to export South Africa’s soul to the world.”

Healing Through Conversation

Beyond entertainment, Lasizwe wants Awkward Dates to be a platform for healing and understanding.

I want to sit down with people from all walks of life, not just celebrities. People with real stories. This show has already changed lives—people tell me how it helped them see things differently or reflect on their own journeys.”

With this powerful step forward, Lasizwe is not only entertaining the world but inviting it into a conversation that matters.
