Pro-Palestine protest outside US Consulate in Johannesburg! On Saturday, protesters gathered outside the US Consulate in Sandton, Johannesburg, in a powerful display of support for Palestinians affected by the ongoing Gaza conflict.
The demonstration followed the first-ever Palestine Solidarity Walk in Soweto, which began earlier in the day.

The walk started at Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Rockville and was initially set to end at Dlamini Mosque. However, demonstrators extended the route to the US Consulate, chanting “Free, Free Palestine” and waving Palestinian flags.

Drawing Parallels with Apartheid
Many participants wore t-shirts featuring Hector Pieterson, the young boy killed during the 1976 Soweto uprising, highlighting the perceived similarities between South Africa’s apartheid past and the current crisis in Gaza.
Professor Ruth Sacks, an attendee, stated, “The situation in Gaza mirrors South Africa’s painful history.”
Global Conflict, Local Voices
The conflict in Gaza began in 2023 following an attack by Hamas on Israel, which led to Israeli strikes that have since killed thousands of Palestinians.
Groups supporting the protest included South African Jews for a Free Palestine, the BDS movement, Abahlali Basemjondolo, and Africa for Palestine.
