Negotiations between the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) have collapsed once again.

This follows SATAWU’s firm rejection of PRASA’s proposed 5.5% wage increase, citing the exclusion of vital employee benefits.

Union Stands Firm on Demands

SATAWU is demanding a 15% salary hike, a R3,000 housing allowance, a 70% medical aid subsidy, and a non-retrenchment clause in the final agreement.

According to the union, PRASA’s current offer fails to address the real concerns of workers, particularly job security and fair compensation for overnight shifts and educational needs such as book allowances.

Job Security a Key Concern

SATAWU spokesperson Amanda Tshemese stressed that job protection is non-negotiable.

“We are not going to sign any agreement that does not include job security,” Tshemese said. “Why is it difficult for PRASA to agree to this clause if they don’t intend to retrench? The country is facing high unemployment. Millions are without jobs.”

Uncertain Road Ahead

With no agreement in sight, tensions remain high as workers continue to push for better conditions in an already fragile employment landscape.
