Beloved presenter Thembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo is stepping into a powerful new role, embracing what she calls her “calling” — supporting grieving families through the most difficult moments of their lives.
New Reality Series Offers Dignity Through Loss
Mdoda-Nxumalo is the face of Icebo Labantu, an emotionally driven reality series set to premiere on 6 July 2025 at 17:30 on SABC 1. The show offers support to underprivileged South African families struggling to bury their loved ones with dignity.

In collaboration with the Icebolethu Group, Icebo Labantu ensures that financial hardship does not prevent families from saying goodbye with respect and compassion.
“This is a real-life mission. We are creating a space where dignity, empathy, and humanity come first,” said Mdoda-Nxumalo.
There are people in this country who still haven’t been able to bury their loved ones. Some, since as far back as COVID. When I realised people couldn’t even afford to bury their own… I was saddened. I stopped. Then I created. @icebolabantu

Heartbreaking Stories, Human Responses
The series opens with the story of Xoli Mpanza, a young woman reported missing and later found murdered. Her toddler’s cries led to the discovery of her body. The episode documents her family’s pain and the support they receive through the funeral initiative.
On 13 July, viewers will meet Khanyisile, a grieving mother who lost both her partner and unborn child and now faces losing her teenage son. Her episode reflects strength amid unimaginable loss.
Then on 20 July, Gogo Kibi’s story unfolds — a woman who died alone and was nearly denied a burial, until the Vaal community came together to ensure she was laid to rest with honour.
A Platform for Healing and Hope
Icebo Labantu promises more than just compelling storytelling. It aims to restore dignity, inspire compassion, and foster healing for those who need it most — making it one of the most important shows of the season.
