Tshwane mourns slain councillor Thabang Masemola! The community of Mamelodi East in Tshwane is reeling after the shocking murder of 36-year-old former Ward 10 councillor, Thabang Masemola, who was gunned down in broad daylight on Tuesday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that unknown suspects, driving a white Nissan Almera, opened fire on Masemola. No arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear.

ANC Calls for Justice and Investigation

The ANC Greater Tshwane Region expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident. Spokesperson Bafuze Yabo said Masemola was ambushed, labelling the killing a disturbing continuation of unresolved attacks on councillors.

“It is quite disturbing that the spate of killings of councillors is not receding… many of these cases are never resolved,” said Yabo. He added that the ongoing impunity only emboldens criminals, and he urged law enforcement to prioritize investigations into the deaths of public representatives.

DA Joins in Condemnation

The Democratic Alliance (DA) also weighed in, demanding swift justice for the Masemola family. DA Tshwane caucus chief whip Ofentse Madzebatela lamented the erosion of public trust in the police, particularly in light of recent corruption allegations involving top-ranking officials.

“Residents feel even more unsafe. Not only has a young politician been deprived of a promising career, but his family and the residents of Mamelodi are poorer for his loss,” said Madzebatela.

Public Service Under Threat

Both political parties agree that attacks on councillors threaten the very foundation of democracy and community trust. Madzebatela highlighted that ward councillors often go above and beyond for their communities, sacrificing personal time and resources.

“This senseless act of violence must be condemned. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected,” he said.

A Community Left in Mourning

As investigations continue, residents of Mamelodi and surrounding areas are left in shock and fear. Masemola’s death marks yet another violent blow to local governance, sparking renewed calls for protection and accountability for public servants across South Africa.
