However, an investigation by IOL found no connection between MaMkhize and Matlala or his alleged criminal dealings. Cameron later admitted he had mixed up names and confirmed that the weapons were actually linked to Vusi Xaba, not Matlala.
“I can confirm it was a slip-up with the name,” Cameron told the media. “The guns did in fact belong to Vusi Xaba. But while the ownership was legal, the storage of the arms was illegal.”
MaMkhize Demands Apology
Despite Cameron’s correction, MaMkhize is demanding a full retraction and public apology. Her legal representative, Mpho Nefuri, dismissed the explanation and stressed the reputational damage caused.
“My client’s name was erroneously linked to criminal activity,” said Nefuri. “Even SAPS was falsely referenced to add legitimacy to the claim. There’s been no report confirming the arms were illegally owned or stored, and my client doesn’t even know Vusi Matlala.”
