A mother who lost her child to gun violence in Delft said it’s very unfortunate to see crime being normalised in the area.

According to crime statistics released in May, Delft forms part of the 10 police stations with the most murders in the country.

A prayer service for an end to violence has been organised by the Delft Prayer Warriors on Thursday.

Lucille Haynes, who is one of the Delft Prayer Warriors, told Eyewitness News that Thursday marked exactly a month since her 25-year-old son was shot and killed in the area.

She said it was heartbreaking to see people living in fear every day because of rampant crime in Delft.

“Shots are still going off every day and the people are afraid for their children going to school, coming from school, playing outside, and going to shops.”

Haynes said that losing her son still cuts deep.

“But all we can do about it is pray because the only one who can change things for us is God.”

She added that she would not rest until justice for her son was served.
