The African National Congress (ANC)’s national disciplinary committee has rejected the appeal of Obed Bapela, who’s charged with misrepresenting the party’s position on the Western Sahara.
Last year, the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member travelled to Morocco, where he called for increased bilateral ties between the country and South Africa.

Bapela, who has been relieved as the ANC deputy chair of its international relations sub-committee, also said Morocco must be integrated into the African Union.
This was in contrast to the ANC’s longstanding policy of advocating for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people from the occupation of Morocco.
At a media briefing on Wednesday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said this was one of the items before the NEC this week.
“We noted the decisions of the disciplinary committee, which involved several comrades and that some of the decisions include a pending matter before the NDC (National Disciplinary Committee) of comrade Obed Bapela. The appeal that was lodged has been dismissed by the NDC and his disciplinary processes are still continuing.”
