Ex-EFF councillor Dumsani Malevu stabbed to death in Mpophomeni! When news spread on community social media groups that an unidentified body had been found in the Ebumnandini section of Mpophomeni, the family of former EFF PR councillor Dumsani Malevu never imagined it would be him.
Malevu (41) was stabbed multiple times in Ebumnandini on Saturday night.
His body was discovered by members of the community, who shared the news on a local Facebook page. His family confirmed his identity on Monday morning.
They said they are struggling to come to terms with his brutal killing and are desperate to understand what happened in the final moments of his life.
The man accused of killing him, 30-year-old Samkelo Makhubo, was arrested on Tuesday and appeared in the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of murder.

The case was postponed to August 19 for Makhubo to apply for legal aid representation.
Speaking through their pain, Malevu’s cousin, Mxolisi Zuma, said the family was still in shock.
When we heard about a body found in Ebumnandini, we didn’t think it could be Dumsani. He lived in Mashingeni, which is not far from there, but people in the community were saying the man was from Kwa-Chief.
“We didn’t imagine it was him,” said Zuma.
He said the family’s worry grew over the weekend when repeated calls to Malevu’s phone went unanswered and no one knew of his whereabouts.
“We searched everywhere, hoping to find him safe, but we never thought it would end like this. On Monday morning, when we finally found him, our hearts broke.
“We are still in disbelief,” Zuma added.
He described Malevu as a gentle, approachable man who loved people and was never violent. Zuma said they welcomed the arrest of Makhubo and hoped it would lead to knowing the motive behind Malevu’s murder.
Malevu served as a PR councillor in the uMngeni Municipality from 2021 before stepping down last year.
The EFF in uMngeni has called for justice and for all involved in Malevu’s murder to face the law.
It’s really sad and shocking how his life was taken from us. We want to see justice being served so his family can also get closure.
“We worked really well with him. He was such a nice and respectful man. His death is a real loss to us,” said caucus leader Hlengiwe Maphumulo.
uMngeni Chief Whip Thembelani Sikhakhane said Malevu’s death was a huge loss to many.
“He was a fair man, approachable and always fought for a good cause.
“There was a time he stopped a full council meeting demanding an interpreter. Even though we all knew he understood English very well, through him an interpreter was hired.
“We were shocked to learn of his death,” said Sikhakhane.
ANC caucus leader, Thulani Mthalane, said they were shocked by Malevu’s brutal killing and called for justice, with those responsible to face the law.
“We’ve known Malevu before he was even sworn in as a PR councillor as someone who was passionate about community development.
“He was someone who always wanted his points to be heard, even using IsiZulu to be heard, passionate about rural community especially Emashingeni and was also vibrant and firm,” said Mthalane.
