National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said the move sends a strong message that illegal drug trading will not be tolerated.
Police destroy drugs
The operation, which is currently underway, is being kept under strict security to protect the location and the officials involved.
Thursday’s consignment includes substances that were hidden in truck compartments, drugs intercepted at airports, and factory materials used to produce mandrax on a mass scale.
Masemola said destroying the seized stock is part of the national strategy to cut supply and break the back of gangs and criminal syndicates.
“We have mandrax worth R285 million, cocaine to the value of R6 million – each of these tells a story of a criminal syndicate stopped in their tracks.”
