2 teenagers accused of attacking 3 DA MPs in Philippi due back in court on 28 August! Two teenagers are expected to return to the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, in connection with an attack on three Democratic Alliance (DA) MPs in Philippi.

On Tuesday, Parliament’s police committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, National Council of Provinces (NCOP) member, Nicholas Gotsell, and the DA’s spokesperson on policing, Lisa Schickerling, were involved in a suspected smash and grab.

Cameron and Gotsell were assaulted with bricks, while an 18-year-old suspect was shot and wounded, allegedly by Cameron.

A 16-year-old suspect was arrested the next morning.

The 16-year-old accused was in court and was charged with attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances.

However, his co-accused, an 18-year-old, appeared in absentia, as he remains in hospital under police guard.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)’s Eric Ntabazalila: “He has been notified of the postponement date and may appear in court as soon as he is discharged from hospital. More charges are likely to be added as the investigation continues. The case has been postponed until 28 August 2025 for bail information.”

Cameron confirmed that he was in possession of a firearm, saying that he did what needed to be done to defend himself and his colleagues.

A third attacker is still being sought.
