Civil group Operation Watershed said the National Dialogue should also include the more than a million South Africans living abroad.

Over the next nine months, a series of national dialogues are set to be held across the country in a bid to find solutions to the pressing socioeconomic challenges.

However, Operation Watershed is concerned that citizens living abroad have been left out of the process.

Spokesperson Hayley Reichert said many South Africans living abroad still have ambitions of moving back to the country and contributing to the country’s economy and tax base.

This is an opportunity, whether we like how it has come about or not. Whether we like who has been roped in to help get this thing going or not, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, we can either sit back, point our fingers, moan and complain and at the end of the day, when it is a waste of money, we can go ‘I told you so’, or we can get on board and make some noise.”
