Taxi association Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) has called on the Western Cape government to foster another round of peace talks to resolve a violent mini-bus taxi dispute in Cape Town.
Western Cape MEC for Mobility, Isaac Sileku, on Monday warned that he would impose harsher sanctions on CODETA and the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) if they did not urgently resolve their differences.
The rival taxi associations failed to reach a consensus during peace talks last week, sparking a fresh bout of violence which left five people dead.

CODETA spokesperson, Makhosandile Tumana, said the Western Cape Mobility Department must intervene to find a solution to the mini-bus taxi conflict in Cape Town.
Tumana said peace talks with CATA broke down after the feuding taxi associations failed to reach a consensusabout a taxi route from Khayelitsha and Mfuleni to Somerset West.
“This is our appeal to the government of the province. Let us try to work together to solve this matter.”
CATA spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said CATA was open to more peace talks.
“It needs us to wake up and sit together and put together some peace agreement or relook at the peace agreement, what we didn’t do right, or how we can make things right so that it can cover everybody.”
Tumana said CODETA was also not happy with the implementation of Golden Arrow bus services along the route.
