Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has criticised the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape for wrong priorities. Steenhuisen says the R15 million wasted on the infamous Lesseyton stadium in Komani could have been spent on improving the living conditions of poor people of this area, who are in dire need of basic services. Steenhuisen was in Komani as part of his visits to small towns around the country.

The controversial Lesseyton stadium is now a white elephant, despite millions of rands spent to construct the facility. Steenhuisen says there is no justification for spending large sums of money on a stalled project.

“R15 million spent here when you could have built project that would make a meaningful difference in a project here where some people made a great deal of money on the side and people are left to suffer.” Komani residents also got the opportunity to express their frustrations about their living conditions.

“This stadium is a moemish, they could have used the money to attend to infrastructural problems. We need clean drinkable water here, but we end up using water from the stream and we share water with animals. We report the faulty water infrastructure, to the municipality even yesterday we had a meeting with officials and they promised to attend to these issues speedily. Attempts to get a comment form Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality were unsuccessful.

Cooperative governance department in the province appointed a legal firm to investigate alleged procurement irregularities. The department says the investigation has been completed and the report handed over to the former COGTA MEC Xolile Nqatha, but it has not been made public
