15 people killed
It’s understood the minibus taxi was travelling from Qonce to Cape Town when it collided with the bakkie.
The driver of the bakkie died on the scene, while 13 passengers in the minibus taxi were also declared dead on the scene, including the driver.
Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said six passengers were rushed to hospital but one succumbed to injury on arrival.
“This is by far the deadliest crash we’ve witnessed in the Eastern Cape in a long, long time, not even in December or during the recent Easter holidays did we see one crash that has claimed so many lives… Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that have lost loved ones in a flash, and we’re calling for investigators to leave nothing to chance in their investigation of what the real cause of this flash may have been.”
