Two law enforcement officers facing kidnapping and extortion charges are expected to appear at the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on Thursday.
They were arrested on Tuesday in connection with an incident that occurred last week.
The officers were nabbed after being identified by the complainant.
Kidnapping
It’s alleged that the two law enforcement officers approached a man at a supermarket in Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha, last Wednesday and requested his asylum documentation.
When the individual was unable to produce the documents, the officers allegedly instructed him to accompany them and later demanded a ransom for his release.
City of Cape Town Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said his directorate is committed to eliminating corrupt and criminal elements from his department.
“The city takes a dim view of any attempts at dishonesty and illegal behaviour on the part of staff. We will cooperate with SAPS [South African Police Service] to ensure a swift conclusion to the investigation and prosecution.”
The victim’s brother managed to gather some money that he handed over to the officers, leading to the victim’s release.
