Outgoing Hawks head, Godfrey Lebeya, has given special thanks to former Police Minister, Bheki Cele, for resurrecting his career after he was unexpectedly ousted during the so-called state capture years.

A black-tie event was held in Lebeya’s honour on Friday night, marking the end of his term.

The lieutenant general headed up the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation from 2018.

Lebeya was described by speakers at his farewell event, including National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shamila Batohi, as one of the first casualties of state capture.

In 2014, Lebeya was demoted and then sacked by tainted former police commissioner, Riah Phiyega, a decision he challenged and won in the Labour Court.

“We were not prepared because we thought if we just do our job honestly, nothing will happen to you.”

Police Minister Bheki Cele

But it was Cele who returned Lebeya to service, making him head of the Hawks.

“When you came back as Minister of Police, you played a key role in my appointment as the national head of the police, I really appreciate Ndosi, thank you very much for your contribution.”

Lebeya is expected to give his final media briefing on Saturday, which marks his last day in office.
