MACUA demands justice for deceased Stilfontein illegal miners! The Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), together with religious and traditional leaders, held a cleansing ceremony this week at shafts 10 and 11 of the Buffelsfontein mine in Stilfontein, North West.
The event was held in memory of the illegal miners who died during Operation Vala Umgodi.
Tragic Losses During Operation
Since August last year, more than 1,000 illegal miners have emerged from underground tunnels, but many others reportedly died due to dehydration and starvation while trapped inside. The deaths have caused outrage among affected communities, who feel excluded from the processes that followed.

Call for Justice and Inclusion
MACUA representative Sabelo Mnguni highlighted the need for justice and proper closure. “Some of them were not retrieved, some were buried through state funerals where even the community is not participating,” he said. MACUA is demanding that the government acknowledge the trauma faced by affected families and involve local communities in the handling of the deceased.

The organisation continues to advocate for dignity and accountability, urging authorities to include families and communities in efforts to bring closure and healing.
