Mzansi celebs urge youth to honour June 16 legacy! As South Africa marks Youth Day on Monday, 16 June, local celebrities are encouraging the younger generation to honour the courage and sacrifice of the 1976 youth.
The day commemorates the Soweto Uprising, where thousands of black students protested against the apartheid government’s oppressive education system.
Thulani Mtsweni Reflects on Youth Day
Popular actor Thulani Mtsweni highlighted the importance of remembering where the country has come from. “There’s a saying: ‘For one to know where they are going, they must know where they come from,’” he said.
“June 16 reminds us of our national journey. The youth should draw strength from that history—they are the future.”

Call for Unity and Purpose
Mtsweni stressed the need for unity among today’s youth. “In 1976, black youth spoke with one voice. I wish we could return to that spirit. Today’s youth must unite and work towards a common purpose.”
A Day Beyond Celebration
Speaking as a teacher and activist, Mtsweni urged young people to see Youth Day as more than a social occasion. “It’s not just for parties or trending posts. It’s about remembering those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.”
Educate and Empower
He concluded by calling on the youth to educate themselves on South Africa’s history. “Understand the pain, the protest and the purpose. That’s how you truly honour June 16.”
