City Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said that the city’s disaster management team would be on standby.

So from early in the morning we will be getting reports from field staff in disaster risk management and from all the different departments because they are represented at the disaster operations centre around any major incidents that need to be responded to.”

Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said that his department’s preparations started long before winter.

“We’ve got teams across our communities who are doing pro-active maintenance on our sewer systems, we’ve got teams on rivers and canals at the moment removing dumping and reeds, so that the rivers and canals can take as much water as possible, as we expect the volume of rain to be quite substantial.”

The city said that the real test would come once the storms hit, but from a disaster management and infrastructure perspective, its teams were prepared.
