Rapper Da LES opens up about stroke and recovery journey! South African rapper Da LES, real name Leslie Mampe, has broken his silence nearly a year after suffering a stroke. The “North God” hitmaker revealed that the medical emergency occurred on his 39th birthday.
At the time, he reportedly did not have medical aid, which made accessing private healthcare a significant challenge.

Now based in Houston, USA, Da LES is under the care of his mother, Priscilla Mampe. Over the weekend, he released a YouTube video detailing his experience—from the moment he had the stroke to the difficult road of recovery.
The video includes unseen footage of the rapper unconscious in a hospital bed and later learning to walk again. “People thought I was going to die, but I made it,” he said.
He hopes his story will raise awareness about stroke recovery. “It can happen to anybody. One minute you’re fine, and the next, your life flips upside down.”

Da LES revealed that he woke up in the hospital a month after the stroke and described the experience as life-changing. “It’s nothing that you can control. I’m just lucky to be alive,” he said.
Support From Family
His relocation to the US was reportedly to ensure he receives proper care during his recovery. “His mom took him with her so she could be present in his recovery,” a source told Zimoja. Fans have since sent love and support, commending his bravery and honesty.
