Firearms seized from MaMkhize’s home linked to Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala’s security firm! Police portfolio committee chair Ian Cameron has revealed that over 40 firearms seized from businesswoman Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize’s Durban mansion in 2024 belong to a private security company owned by businessman Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The weapons were confiscated in a joint raid by the Hawks, police, and SARS last November, sparking widespread public interest and concern.

Security Company Under Scrutiny
Matlala’s company had been awarded a R360 million contract by the SA Police Service in 2024, despite his name surfacing in serious allegations involving interference in police investigations.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused senior law enforcement officials of meddling in active cases, referencing WhatsApp communications found on Matlala’s phone allegedly linking Police Minister Senzo Mchunu via an associate, Brown Mogotsi.
Matlala was arrested in May 2025 on three counts of attempted murder.
PSIRA and Accountability Questions
During a recent media briefing, Cameron questioned how Matlala’s security company retained accreditation from the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) amid these allegations.
“Despite the firearms being stored illegally at a private residence unfit for such purposes, no transgressions were found by PSIRA,” Cameron noted.
He further highlighted a troubling double standard: “If it were you or me, we’d face legal action, yet these firearms were returned without consequence.”
Public Reaction
The incident has sparked heated debate on social media, with many South Africans calling for greater transparency and accountability within both the private security industry and government institutions. Cameron also expressed frustration that parliamentary questions submitted on the matter remain unanswered.
As investigations continue, the incident raises deeper concerns about the intersection of private business, policing, and political power in South Africa.
