Video: SAPS vows action after alleged drunk-on-duty cop goes viral! The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that an urgent investigation is underway following the circulation of a widely viewed video on TikTok, which appears to show a uniformed police officer allegedly under the influence of alcohol while on duty.

The video depicts members of the public confronting the officer alongside other SAPS members. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the North-West Provincial Commissioner has taken a serious view of the footage and the allegations it contains.

“The Provincial Commissioner who is on record as saying that ill-discipline and intemperate behaviour by members shall not be tolerated, views the video including the allegations in a very serious light and has instructed the District Commissioner to immediately investigate the allegations, which if indeed true amounts not only to serious misconduct, but also a criminal offence,” Mokgwabone said.

Authorities have cautioned that such claims can severely undermine the public’s trust in the police and damage the SAPS’ professional image.

These allegations cannot and should not be taken lightly as they are damaging to the integrity and professional image of the SAPS further contributing to the trust deficit between the police and the community,” Mokgwabone added.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that two individuals, identified as members of the Patriotic Alliance and Operation Dudula who had travelled from Gauteng to Bethanie, may hold key information. The SAPS has urged them to come forward without delay.

Efforts have been made by talking to locals to obtain evidence and it has been indicated that the two are the best placed to help unravel the allegations against the police officer,” said Mokgwabone. “The SAPS is therefore calling upon the two to urgently contact the District Commissioner or the Provincial Corporate Communication and Liaison to assist in this investigation.”

Police have emphasised that the inquiry will be conducted impartially and without favour.

“It is equally important to point out that this matter shall be investigated without fear, favour or prejudice,” Mokgwabone stated.

The SAPS has also warned that anyone spreading serious allegations without formally reporting them could face legal consequences, including charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.
