Evidence leader in the Judicial Conduct Tribunal investigating Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge claimed that the judge only wanted a s.e.xual relationship with high court secretary, Andiswa Mengo.
Advocate Salome Scheepers said it was unlikely that Mbenenge pursued Mengo with the interest of developing a romantic relationship, as he was already married.
The judge was cross-examined before the tribunal, as it continues investigating sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by his junior staffer.

Mbenenge denied the accusations, but was particularly ruffled when Scheepers introduced his marital status in her questioning.
Scheepers: “To have a romantic relationship with someone in the hopes of marrying someone or having a close relationship with that person.”
Mbenenge: “Correct.”
Scheepers: “In fact, unfortunately, in this instance, you are already a married man.”
Mbenenge: “What has that to do with these proceedings, ma’am?”
Scheepers: “Who did not want a serious relationship? Ms mengo? You wanted a sexual relationship with her.”
Mbenenge: “Evidence leader, I urge you and I appeal to you that you don’t pose questions to me that are not relevant to the issue at hand.”
