The occupants were removed for failure to pay rent on time and for illegally occupying the buildings.

Some of the residents were left in limbo, with their belongings, including beds, clothes, and appliances, littered across the street.
Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza said illegal occupants had cost the city millions in municipal debt.

“Where we are, we have actually said that let’s not stop. We must carry on to actually ensure that all the illegally occupied buildings, whether owned by the municipality, including to assist these ones that are owned by private owners.”
