The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is urging its beneficiaries who have fallen victim of unlawful deductions on their grants to report the matter at their offices.
In a statement, the agency confirmed they were aware of financial service providers who allegedly deduct money from their members.
SASSA urges beneficiaries
SASSA said beneficiaries had been complaining about the deductions, as they had not authorised them.
“The South African Social Security Agency has warned that deducting money from social grants beneficiaries without their consent is unlawful,” said agency spokesperson Andile Tshona.
“Some SASSA beneficiaries have been complaining that there are deductions in their grants that they have no knowledge of. These range from funeral policies to life policies, and some beneficiaries say they did not sign up for them.”
