The South African Broadcasting Corporation has officially confirmed that popular drama series Pimville will no longer air on SABC 2.
In a statement released to the public, the broadcaster announced that the show has been discontinued with immediate effect due to unresolved contractual matters and alleged breaches linked to production company Bakwena Productions.
“Following a thorough review process and careful consideration, the SABC regrets to announce that Pimville will be discontinued from tonight, due to unresolved contractual obligations and breaches identified and communicated formally to Bakwena Productions,” the statement read.
The sudden cancellation comes after weeks of growing controversy surrounding the production, including concerns raised over unpaid cast and crew members. Reports and discussions surrounding behind-the-scenes challenges had already sparked uncertainty among viewers and industry insiders before the official announcement was made.

While the broadcaster did not provide full details regarding the alleged contractual breaches, it confirmed that legal processes are currently underway. According to the SABC, a formal notice of breach was issued to Bakwena Productions in April 2026, with further action expected to depend on the outcome of ongoing contractual and legal proceedings.
Despite the fallout, the public broadcaster acknowledged the commitment and hard work shown by those involved in the production of the series.
“This outcome is deeply regrettable, particularly considering the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the cast, crew, as well as the unwavering support received from audiences, partners, and all stakeholders who contributed to the programme’s success,” the SABC stated.
The broadcaster also moved to reassure viewers that standard procedures had initially been followed when the telenovela was commissioned.
“The acquisition and commissioning of Pimville followed the Corporation’s standard approval and commissioning processes applicable to SABC productions,” the statement added.
However, the corporation admitted that some oversight systems were not consistently implemented during the production process, resulting in internal disciplinary procedures being launched.
“As previously communicated publicly by the Corporation, it was subsequently identified that certain approved oversight mechanisms were not implemented consistently and to the required standard. Consequently, an internal consequence management process has been initiated,” the broadcaster explained.
The cancellation has raised broader concerns within the local television industry regarding production management, accountability and the treatment of cast and crew members working behind the scenes. The issue of delayed or unpaid salaries in television productions has become an increasingly discussed topic in the South African entertainment sector in recent years.
With Pimville now removed from the schedule, the 21:00 timeslot on SABC 2 will temporarily be filled with repeat episodes of Season 2 of Amalanga Awafani while the broadcaster determines its next steps.
The SABC further revealed that it has already engaged with cast and crew representatives regarding the concerns raised and says it remains focused on protecting affected stakeholders while exploring possible solutions for the future of the production.
“The Corporation remains committed to stabilising the production environment, ensuring continuity of content, protecting the interests of affected stakeholders, and exploring all appropriate operational options relating to the future of the production,” the statement concluded.
The broadcaster also apologised to viewers for the disruption to the channel’s programming schedule as uncertainty continues to surround the long-term future of Pimville and everyone involved in the production.
