Kaya 959 has wasted no time reshaping its breakfast lineup following the shocking departure of Sizwe Dhlomo.
The commercial radio station has officially confirmed that legendary broadcaster DJ Fresh, born Thato Sikwane, will join Kaya 959 from 1 July, stepping into the breakfast slot following Dhlomo’s exit.
DJ Fresh will be joined by his longtime on-air collaborator and trusted producer Thato Mataboge, marking another major chapter in one of South African radio’s most recognisable partnerships.

With a broadcasting career spanning more than three decades, DJ Fresh has played a significant role in shaping South African breakfast and drive-time radio through his work at stations including YFM, 5FM and Metro FM.
Beyond radio, he has also built a strong profile as a DJ, music producer, entrepreneur and live performer.
Since stepping away from mainstream radio, DJ Fresh has remained active in media through his podcast WAW (What A Week) and the launch of community radio station 93.8FM alongside Unathi Nkayi.
Speaking about his return to breakfast radio, DJ Fresh said the format has always held special meaning for him because of the close connection it creates with listeners.
“Breakfast radio has always been special to me because it allows you to become part of people’s daily lives,” he said in a statement.
“Kaya 959 has built something unique, a powerful brand, a loyal audience, and a strong connection with Gauteng. Thato and I are looking forward to joining an already formidable team of broadcasters and to creating a show that is entertaining, warm, insightful and full of energy.”
He also reflected on the reunion with fellow broadcaster Mpho Maboi, describing it as a full-circle moment more than two decades in the making.

“This is a reunion 20 years in the making. That’s the last time Mpho Maboi, Thato and I were on radio together, making this a full circle moment for us. We feel like we’re coming home together and we want to make mornings on Kaya 959 essential listening. We want listeners to feel informed, inspired, entertained and connected every single day,” he added.
The announcement comes just days after Sizwe Dhlomo emotionally confirmed on air that he would be leaving Kaya 959 after years at the station. Although Dhlomo initially told listeners his contract would end at the close of June, the station later confirmed that his final day on air would officially be 27 May.
Following the announcement, Kaya 959 revealed that Thomas Msengana would temporarily take over the breakfast show throughout June ahead of the launch of the new permanent lineup in July.
The station’s latest move has already generated major reaction online, with many listeners expressing excitement over DJ Fresh’s return to mainstream commercial radio while others continue reflecting on Sizwe Dhlomo’s unexpected exit.
