The holiday season may soon get another dose of chaos, as one of cinema’s most iconic festive characters is officially making a comeback.

More than two decades after How the Grinch Stole Christmas first hit theatres in 2000, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are developing a live-action sequel, with Jim Carrey in early talks to reprise his legendary role as the green, Christmas-hating Grinch.

If the deal moves forward, director Ron Howard is also expected to return, reuniting the creative team behind the original blockbuster.

A Return to Whoville in the Making

The sequel is currently in development, with acclaimed comedy writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel penning the screenplay. The trio previously collaborated on another Dr. Seuss adaptation, 2003’s The Cat in the Hat, adding further nostalgia to the project’s creative lineup.

While the film is still in its early stages, its development signals a major revival of one of the most successful holiday films of its era.

The Grinch Role That Defined Jim Carrey’s Holiday Legacy

Jim Carrey’s performance as the Grinch remains one of the most recognisable roles of his career, blending physical comedy, improvisation and intense prosthetic work to bring the character to life.

However, behind the scenes, the experience was notoriously demanding.

The transformation process required hours in makeup each day, with Carrey later describing it as physically and mentally overwhelming. He has referred to the experience as feeling like “being buried alive every day,” highlighting the strain of wearing heavy prosthetics throughout production.

At one point during filming, the pressure reportedly became so intense that he briefly considered leaving the project altogether.

The Gruelling Production That Became Legendary

The difficulties of filming the original movie have become part of Hollywood lore. Carrey has joked in past interviews about the extreme measures taken to help him endure the process, including training designed to help him cope with the stress of the makeup sessions.

By the end of production, he had reportedly undergone the Grinch transformation more than 90 times, a physically exhausting commitment that ultimately helped cement the character’s unforgettable screen presence.

Despite the challenges, the film went on to become a massive box office success and a staple of holiday viewing worldwide.

Could Modern Technology Bring the Grinch Back?

One of the biggest reasons a sequel is now considered viable is the evolution of filmmaking technology.

Carrey has previously suggested that modern motion capture and digital effects could make returning to the role significantly easier, reducing the need for lengthy and uncomfortable prosthetic sessions.

“The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe,” he previously said. “It was an extremely excruciating process… and now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things.”

While it remains unclear whether the sequel will rely on traditional makeup, CGI, or a hybrid approach, advancements in visual effects could make the production far more manageable for the actor.

Story Details Still Under Wraps

At this stage, no official plot details or release timeline have been announced.

The project is being developed in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, overseen by CEO Susan Brandt, ensuring the sequel remains aligned with the original source material.

Interestingly, Dr. Seuss Enterprises released an official book sequel in 2023 titled How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, which follows the Grinch as he attempts to rediscover the spirit of the holiday season through a Whoville Christmas tree contest.

Whether the film will adapt this storyline or create an entirely new narrative remains to be seen.

A Holiday Revival Fans Didn’t Expect

If confirmed, the return of Jim Carrey as the Grinch would mark one of the most significant legacy sequels in recent memory, bringing back a character that has remained a staple of holiday culture for over two decades.

For fans, the idea of revisiting Whoville with modern filmmaking tools—and the original star back in green makeup—has already sparked major excitement.

And if history is anything to go by, the Grinch may once again be ready to steal Christmas… all over again.
