KwaZulu-Natal’s Community Policing Forum (CPF) said the fight against rising crime levels could only succeed if more residents actively volunteer their time and support.
The warning comes in the wake of yet another mass killing, where eight people were gunned down in Umlazi, south of Durban, on Friday night.
As police top brass and Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli assessed the scene in Umlazi, horrified residents looked on from beyond the police tape.
Crime levels
Hours after the bodies were removed, blood stains and bullet holes still mark the house where the deadly shooting unfolded.
Provincial CPF chairperson Siyanda Biyela believes incidents like these could be curbed if more residents stepped up and joined crime-fighting structures.
“Part of our challenges is that people now are getting scared to report these criminals, because these syndicates, especially in informal settlements, are more on the drugs – they’re people who are selling drugs and alcohol. As CPF, people must join the CPF and other crime-fighting structures.”
