American R&B superstar and Grammy-nominated singer Tyrese Gibson is officially heading to South Africa, with the multi-talented performer set to headline the closing night of Ndlala Grandeur II in Pretoria on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The announcement is expected to excite generations of R&B fans who have long followed Gibson’s music, from his breakthrough in the late 1990s to his rise as one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars.
Tyrese will take centre stage at Ndlala Arena as part of a three-day celebration of R&B and soul running from August 21 to 23. The festival’s line-up brings together an impressive mix of international and South African talent, including Ginuwine, Mýa, RL, Case, Zonke Dikana and Vusi Nova.
While the weekend features several major names from the genre, Sunday night will belong to Tyrese.
A career built on R&B classics
Long before audiences knew him as Roman Pearce in the Fast & Furious franchise or Robert Epps in Transformers, Tyrese was establishing himself as a formidable R&B vocalist.
Born and raised in Los Angeles’ Watts neighbourhood, Gibson first attracted widespread attention through a Coca-Cola commercial before signing with RCA Records and releasing his self-titled debut album in 1998.

The album introduced audiences to a young singer with a powerful, emotionally charged voice and produced hits including “Sweet Lady” and “Nobody Else”. His debut eventually achieved platinum status in the United States, setting the foundation for a career that would span music, film, television and publishing.
He followed it with 2000 Watts in 2001, an album named after his home neighbourhood. The project reached the US Top 10 and featured songs such as “I Like Them Girls” and “Just a Baby Boy”.
In 2002, Tyrese released I Wanna Go There, which produced what remains one of his signature songs, “How You Gonna Act Like That”. The track became a major crossover success and remains a favourite among R&B audiences more than two decades later.
His catalogue continued to grow with albums including Alter Ego, Open Invitation and Black Rose. The latter became a significant career milestone when it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2015.
From R&B star to Hollywood heavyweight
Tyrese’s success was never confined to the recording studio.
His acting breakthrough came with John Singleton’s 2001 coming-of-age drama Baby Boy, in which he played Jody Summers. The role established him as a serious screen performer and began a long relationship with Hollywood.
Two years later, he joined the Fast & Furious universe as Roman Pearce in 2 Fast 2 Furious. The character became one of the franchise’s most popular supporting roles, with Tyrese returning for several subsequent instalments, including Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7 and later films in the franchise.
He also became part of another major blockbuster series through the Transformers films, playing Robert Epps opposite Shia LaBeouf.
His film credits have also included Four Brothers, Waist Deep, Death Race, Legion and other productions, allowing him to build a career that successfully crosses music and acting.

The TGT connection makes the Pretoria show even more significant
For R&B fans, Tyrese’s appearance at Ndlala Grandeur II carries an additional layer of nostalgia because of his connection with fellow headliner Ginuwine.
The two singers, alongside Tank, formed the R&B supergroup TGT. Their collaboration eventually produced the 2013 album Three Kings, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200.
That connection makes the festival’s international line-up particularly appealing to fans of early-2000s and 2010s R&B. With Ginuwine also appearing during the weekend, audiences will have an opportunity to experience two members of the acclaimed trio in the same festival programme.
The line-up also brings together artists whose music helped define different chapters of contemporary R&B. Mýa, RL and Case are similarly associated with the genre’s golden era, while South African performers such as Zonke and Vusi Nova bring a local soul perspective to the celebration.
A weekend dedicated to R&B nostalgia
Ndlala Grandeur II is shaping up as more than a conventional concert. Its programming brings together established international names and leading South African voices for a weekend designed around R&B, soul and live performance.
For many fans, the appeal will be the opportunity to hear songs that have remained part of the soundtrack to their lives, performed by the original artists.
Tyrese’s Sunday headline slot is likely to be one of the weekend’s biggest draws, particularly given the depth of his catalogue. From “Sweet Lady” and “How You Gonna Act Like That” to songs from albums such as 2000 Watts, Open Invitation and Black Rose, his performance has the potential to take audiences through several eras of his career.
The singer has also continued to maintain his musical identity alongside his Hollywood commitments, most recently adding to his discography with Beautiful Pain, demonstrating that music remains an important part of his creative career.
Tyrese’s long-awaited South African moment
Tyrese’s arrival in South Africa also comes after he previously expressed an interest in visiting the country, making the Pretoria performance a long-awaited moment for his local supporters.
For South African R&B fans, seeing him perform live represents more than another international celebrity appearance. Tyrese’s music has remained deeply familiar to audiences who grew up with the genre’s late-1990s and early-2000s sound.
Now, that connection will move from playlists and memories to the live stage.
Ndlala Grandeur II will take place at Ndlala Arena in Pretoria from August 21 to 23, 2026. Tyrese Gibson will headline the final night on Sunday, August 23, bringing his distinctive vocals, decades-spanning catalogue and Hollywood presence to what promises to be one of the weekend’s major R&B moments.
For fans who have been waiting years to see the R&B heavyweight on South African soil, the wait is finally coming to an end.
