Police deny claims of unfair treatment of Stilfontein miners! The South African Police Service (SAPS) has dismissed allegations of unfair treatment and neglect toward miners rescued from an illegal mining operation in Stilfontein, North West.

This comes amid reports of a miner’s death and concerns over the well-being of others in police custody.

Death of a Miner Sparks Concern

The controversy arose following the death of Koali Rankomo, one of the miners rescued last week. Rankomo passed away while receiving treatment at the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Tertiary Hospital, where he had been admitted for gastroenteritis and dehydration, according to North West Department of Health spokesperson, Tshegofatso Mothibedi.

His death has fueled criticism, with some alleging inadequate care for the miners, many of whom are suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities.

Health Care for Miners in Custody

The Department of Health confirmed that 32 suspected illegal miners are currently in its care, all under police guard. SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that the police, in collaboration with the Department of Health, are ensuring the miners receive proper medical attention.

“On a daily basis, SAPS members conduct inspections at police holding cells, and those that require medical care are referred and admitted to a local hospital,” said Mathe.

She revealed that the number of miners admitted to the hospital rose from nine on January 13 to 32 as of January 21, reflecting the seriousness of their health conditions.

Unfair Treatment Allegations Rejected

Brigadier Mathe refuted claims that the miners are being mistreated or denied adequate medical care.
“The narrative that illegal miners are not receiving adequate medical care is refuted and devoid of truth,” she said.

She emphasized that SAPS has been actively monitoring the conditions of the miners and responding promptly to their medical needs.

Background on the Stilfontein Operation

The rescued miners were part of a large group working in illegal mining activities in Stilfontein. Authorities have been cracking down on such operations, which pose significant risks to both the miners and surrounding communities. Illegal mining often involves unsafe working conditions and exploitation by syndicates, contributing to health hazards and fatalities.

While SAPS and health authorities have prioritized the miners’ care, the situation highlights the broader challenges posed by illegal mining in South Africa.

The Role of the Department of Health

The North West Department of Health has stepped in to provide medical assistance to the miners, many of whom presented symptoms of dehydration and malnutrition upon their rescue. Department spokesperson Mothibedi assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the miners’ recovery.

Despite the death of Rankomo, Mothibedi stressed that healthcare providers are doing their utmost to treat the remaining miners effectively.

Criticism and the Response from Authorities

Human rights organizations and activists have raised concerns about the treatment of rescued illegal miners, particularly those held in police custody. However, SAPS and health officials have maintained that these claims are baseless and fail to account for the ongoing efforts to provide medical care.

SAPS has reiterated its commitment to transparency and human dignity in handling such cases, urging the public not to believe unverified reports.

Illegal Mining: A National Concern

The Stilfontein incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal mining, which has become a pervasive issue in South Africa. These operations often exploit vulnerable individuals, subjecting them to hazardous conditions while putting strain on local resources.

Government agencies are intensifying efforts to combat illegal mining and address its underlying causes, including poverty and unemployment.

Looking Ahead

As investigations continue into Rankomo’s death and the broader illegal mining operation in Stilfontein, authorities have pledged to uphold the health and safety of those in custody. Brigadier Mathe concluded:
“We remain committed to treating everyone with dignity while upholding the rule of law.”

The case underscores the need for a holistic approach to tackling illegal mining, balancing law enforcement with support for vulnerable individuals drawn into these dangerous activities.
