Western Cape govt reduces speed limit on section of R44 running through Betty’s Bay! The Western Cape government has heeded calls from Betty’s Bay residents to reduce the 80km/h speed limit on a section of R44 that runs through the area.

In 2024, the provincial infrastructure department received a request to decrease the speed limit to 60km/h to improve safety.

Residents felt the speed limit was too high, given the presence of pedestrians and wildlife.

Western Cape Infrastructure MEC Tertuis Simmers said that road signs displaying the new speed limit would be installed in due course.

“The investigation by my department has shown that a decrease of the speed limit on this section of the road is viable, and I am pleased that my department and the Department of Mobility can work together to respond to the concerns of our communities.”

Provincial Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku added that the safety of all road users was their number one priority.

“This speed limit reduction is about saving lives. Lower speeds mean safer roads for residents, visitors, and everyone who travels through this area.”
