The Hollywoodbets Durban July continues to reign as South Africa’s version of the Met Gala — a glamorous fusion of culture, fashion, and imagination.
Each year, the event sets the stage for the country’s biggest stars to show up in extravagant outfits, hoping to make a statement on the red carpet.

The 2025 theme, “Marvel of Mzansi,” challenged attendees to celebrate South African heritage, creativity, and flair. While many dazzled, some celebrities unfortunately missed the mark.
1. DJ Zinhle – Playing It Too Safe
DJ Zinhle opted for a red pants and top set with an oversized hat. While fashionable by everyday standards, the look lacked the cultural or thematic interpretation required by the brief. Her ensemble, although elegant, felt like a red carpet fallback, not a tribute to Mzansi.

2. Makhadzi – A Second Swing and Miss
For the second year running, Makhadzi failed to wow. Her gown, while formal, aged her and lacked vibrancy. Known for her bold personality, fans were left wanting more. She desperately needs a stylist who can channel her energy into theme-worthy designs.

3. Londie London – No Theme in Sight
Londie made no effort to follow the theme — and admitted as much in her caption: “Marvel of …yho ngyadlala Angikho.” Her sleek black bodycon dress was flattering but gave club night vibes, not fashion extravaganza.

4. Mawhoo – Beautiful But Off-Theme
Mawhoo stunned in a royal blue gown, showcasing her curves and grace. However, the outfit lacked any cultural or symbolic elements tied to the theme. At an event like Durban July, beauty alone isn’t enough.

5. Khosi Twala – Bold But Misguided
Khosi’s leopard-print swimsuit-inspired ensemble was daring, but not in a way that honoured the Marvel of Mzansi concept. It read more as a festival look than a tribute to South African heritage.

Missed Opportunities Amid a Cultural Celebration
While fashion is subjective, the Durban July’s theme is meant to honour and amplify local identity. Sadly, some stars missed a chance to do just that — proving that at this high-profile event, looking good isn’t the same as getting it right.
