MaMkhize named President of Mbabane Highlanders amid controversy! Shauwn Mkhize, popularly known as MaMkhize, has been officially announced as the new president of eSwatini’s football club, Mbabane Highlanders—now renamed Mbalane Highlanders AM.
The announcement was made during a special welcome ceremony on Saturday, 12 July, marking a new chapter in the club’s history.
President of Mbabane Highlanders
This appointment comes just months after MaMkhize’s South African team, Royal AM, was expelled from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) following a R40 million debt seizure by the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
“A Partnership, Not a Takeover”
During the ceremony, MaMkhize emphasized that her involvement is not a takeover but a strategic partnership. “Today marks a new chapter… a merging of histories between Eswatini and South Africa, rooted in shared ambition and excellence,” she said.
She added that the club’s rebranding would include a “touch of gold” and the signature “AM” branding, with players now donning black and gold kits. “We’re not here to participate; we’re here to elevate,” she stated confidently.

Not an Owner, But a Key Partner
Despite the visual similarities to her Royal AM brand, MaMkhize does not own the Highlanders. Instead, she has signed a three-year management contract with the club. According to reports from Sunday World, her influence will extend to operations and branding but not ownership.
Controversial Track Record
MaMkhize’s appointment hasn’t come without criticism. She has faced multiple legal issues over the years, including allegations of tax evasion, fraud, bribery, and forgery. The controversy surrounding her name has left some in the football community uneasy.
Reactions from Rivals
Earlier this year, MaMkhize was spotted at the Ingwenyama Cup final between Moneni Pirates and Royal Leopards, sparking rumors she might buy the Pirates. However, club president Thulani Xaba dismissed the claims.
Speaking to FARPost, Xaba said, “I haven’t spoken to or met her. There’s nothing that has been spoken from my end.” He subtly implied that MaMkhize wasn’t someone they’d want associated with the club, alluding to her legal woes.
As MaMkhize begins her presidency at Mbabane Highlanders, all eyes are on whether her bold promises will translate into results—and how her reputation may shape the club’s future.
