The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has asked China to postpone military exercises between the two countries and Russia, considering South Africa’s G20 Presidency status.
As host of this year’s G20 Summit, South Africa has assumed the G20 Presidency from 1 December 2024 until the end of November this year.

The joint naval exercise between China, South Africa, and Russia is also planned for November in China.
It’s the third iteration of the exercise, which takes place every two years between these (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) BRICS partners.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said they’re engaging their China counterparts for a new date suitable for all parties.
“This is to ensure that the exercises do not impact on the logistical, security, and other arrangements associated with South Africa’s G20 Presidency. South Africa’s participation in military exercises of this nature with various countries is part of the furtherance of sound multilateral and bilateral relations.”
