Uber driver accuses Babes Wodumo of unpaid trip from 2019! An Uber driver, Percy Bhengu, has come forward with claims that South African Gqom artist Babes Wodumo owes him R900 for transport services rendered six years ago.
Bhengu, who was driving full-time in 2019, says he transported the singer and her sister, Nondumiso Simelane, to various events in Durban but was never paid for the last trip or reimbursed for borrowed cash.
A Promising Start Turns Sour
Bhengu recalls the first trip going smoothly. He drove Nondumiso and a dancer to a gig in Pongola after Babes pulled out at the last minute. He received payment for that journey. However, issues began with the next job, when he drove Babes and Nondumiso from Westville to DJ Tira’s shoot in KwaMashu.

During the drive, Babes reportedly asked to borrow money for sanitary pads, promising to repay him later. Upon arriving at the venue, she claimed she couldn’t go in due to lack of makeup and requested to be driven home. Bhengu obliged, but says he never received payment for the trip or reimbursement for the borrowed money.
False Hope and Broken Trust
Later that night, Bhengu was again contacted to drive the sisters to The Sails at Durban’s Shaka Marine. Hoping to finally be paid, he agreed. Unfortunately, that was the last time he saw them.
“No payment, no refund, just nothing. My time, my fuel, my money, gone,” he said. “You know the excitement of working with celebrities, thinking they’ll respect you, maybe even tip you? Turns out, it was all just a fairy tale.”
A Matter of Principle
Bhengu says the unpaid amount, while small to some, represents more than just money. “It may not sound like much, but that’s my money. With interest, who knows how much that would be today? I just want what I worked for,” he said.
Despite repeated efforts to contact Babes and her sister, Bhengu says he has been blocked and ignored. He never took the issue to Small Claims Court, hoping they would settle the debt amicably. Now, he’s gone public to warn others in the gig economy about the risks of working with high-profile clients without upfront agreements.
“I just want to make sure other people don’t get used the way I did,” he concluded.
